Designer Dispatch: Dee Ocleppo Handbags

Designer Dee Ocleppo invites us to her studio and joins Saks for a soiree benefiting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Remember the name: Dee Ocleppo. The half-Turkish, half-English handbag designer has found a niche in the accessories market that is both so original and such a no-brainer that even she admits to some degree of incredulity that it was hers for the taking. The conceit: three bags in one. Pull the cover off, reverse it and transform your bag from a handsome python handbag to one covered in luxurious fox fur. Or, leave the cover off altogether to sport, who knows – lynx? Plain and simple. Though, those two words only apply to Dee’s concept. The skins and textiles, naturally, that’s a completely different story.

The Three Faces of Dee Ocleppo Handbags

In her design pursuit, Dee Ocleppo always has the practical luxury customer in mind. She designs with real-world knowledge as her guiding light. The lining in her purses is pink; not to fill a feminine quotient, but because it helps her to find scattered objects in her purse at night time. It brings to mind that tidbit that followed after Phoebe Philo launced her furry versions of Birkenstocks for Celine a few years back. The inspiration? She was pregnant and wanted to be comfortable. It’s the kind of sensibility that spawns luxury goods people champ at the bit for. Dee’s conceit is no exception.

We sat with Dee at her studio on Fifth Avenue to see her remarkable, transformative bags up close before her fête at Saks the next day.

SAKSPOV: Something we really love about your handbags from season to season is their versatility – how you’re able to flip and exchange the skins and the furs. Does that come from how you live your own life? You naturally like to flip things and see things from different aspects and angles?

DEE OCLEPPO: Everything I design comes from me being a woman and a mother, a traveler and a woman with an active social life. My handbags have a lot of functionality and they are crafted to be worn in several unique ways. Even from the pink lining on the inside, its because at night I can’t find anything when its dark. The chain on the cocktail bag is because I’m always at a gathering with a cocktail bag holding a drink or trying to shake hands, so everything I design has some kind of function. A woman designing for a woman just thinks differently. We think about what we need.

Who are some of the people that influenced your design trajectory thus far?

DEE: Your President, Marigay McKee, was actually a huge influence for me. When I first showed her the idea she loved it, but she was the one that pushed me to make the line even more luxurious.

Chic Transformations

How does travel play into the DNA of the Dee Ocleppo handbags brand?

DEE: I thought, how great would it be to lay the cover flat on the bottom of a suitcase and to use your bag in three different ways? When you’re traveling and you want to take three different bags – that’s half of your suitcase space right there. So you have one bag with three different ways to wear it. It’s ideal for those who don’t like to be photographed with the same accessory. The bags allow you to have different looks and its just fun. In the beginning,  I thought it was rare to enter the market place and see that no one has exploited this idea. It’s very hard to have a specific point of entry or statement. To come in as this little guy with this idea is exciting.

Who were the first people you saw that really made your idea their own and started personalizing the bags?

DEE: A lot of my friends. They were the first. I had a couple of girlfriends that were rocking them and they looked amazing. I was walking into a fashion show with a friend and a photographer stopped her to get a picture of her bag and the photographer asked, “Whose bag is that?” And she said, “Oh its her!” Things like that have been fun.

A Bevy of the Colorful Best-Selling Mustique Bags

There’s a philanthropic backbone to your business as well. Tell us about your endeavors with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) and the Autism Speaks non-profit organization.

DEE: We created our pink Hong Kong Cross Body Smartphone bag specifically for BCRF because it’s just a great practical thing to carry. If you’re running out to run a quick errand, or even to go out at night, it works as a very practical item, so it was a natural choice. The BCRF affects so many women and this project was a great way to reach out to so many people and make a difference.

You have another bag coming out for spring 2015 that has charitable story attached to it as well. Can you give us a hint about what to expect?

DEE: I did a collaboration with the artist Mark Quinn to help benefit the Autism Speaks advocacy organization . He has a lot of fans we both have homes in Mustique, so we came up with a very simple, affordable beach bag with one of Mark’s images on it. I think it raises awareness for Mark, myself and more importantly, it raises money for autism.
