SAKSPOV: We’re here to celebrate the new Wildly Gold holiday collection. We have it on our Yves Saint Laurent page featuring Cara (Delevingne). Why don’t you tell us a little bit about it?

Lloyd Simmonds: Ok there’s going to be the couture palette with four items that are really easy to use, even for me, easy to use, its just dark to light with a main color, darker color, lining, shaping color, and then highlight color.

Lloyd Experimenting with Color

There’s no deep red with this collection of lipstick shades, but more of a pink, which is almost reminiscent of spring. Was that your approach?

Lloyd: Exactly. I wanted to switch things around; it’s also nice to brighten. I didn’t want to dramatize, I just wanted to brighten it with the color. The cheek is really bright, giving a kind of pink plush and two lips, one much more transparent and light with the Sheer Candy, which is like our luxurious lip balm, and then a beautiful fuchsia in that palette is sort of wild cat inspired.

Densities of Color

How did you land on this leopard print for the Wildly Gold packaging?

Lloyd: The whole idea behind the entire collection is very feline. So I crawled out a really extreme cat eye shape that’s still chic. Everything was all about feline, so we went with a gold feline print and printing on the collector Touche Éclat.

Besides the packaging of the YSL make-up, the gold components makes it all feel younger, with a bit more fervor?

Lloyd: Yeah there’s a new way of looking at it. It doesn’t look like 35 years ago when it was first introduced. We’re trying to make it look slicker, less obvious. It doesn’t look like so-called “bling”. It looks like a sleek, nice object you want to put in your purse.

Staying away from the flashy era of Studio 54?

Lloyd: Exactly. Not so “bling”. It’s the iconic colors black, gold, fuchsia, red, and orange, those are the five colors are the ultimate branding of the YSL.

A Canadian in Paris: Lloyd Simmonds

Now YSL/Saint Laurent, in the scope of how it’s viewed, is now a wild child in the fashion sphere. How would you say this make-up collection balances the needs of the classists and the new guard?

Lloyd: That is precisely what I am always trying to do with all the collections I do, is that I really try to make it work for everybody. There’s one way of twisting that makes it sort of like Cara (Delevingne- as seen in the ad) and another way of twisting that makes it something for the ladies we work with today. So, it’s just a way of twisting how you work with the colors themselves and how you apply the colors. It doesn’t have to be put on in that A-B-C kind of way, because that makes it look old. You are meant to do whatever you want. That’s what makes the look modern.
