The Ultimate Accessory? Mother Nature By Way of One Talented Floral Designer.

The spring campaign for Saks Glam Gardens 2016 was a glamorous, romantic riot of floral dresses and delicate details. But the ultimate fashion accessory came straight from Mother Nature – with a little help from one very talented floral designer named Christy Doramus. The go-to flower crown designer for celebs and socials like Drew Barrymore and Shoshonna Gruss, Christy crafted the enchanting floral headpieces seen here. SaksPOV: So we read you worked in beauty PR before starting Crowns by Christy. That’s quite a career change! How’d did this all happen? When you were a kid did you think you’d be working in floral design?

Christy Doramus: My business started sort of accidentally almost three years ago when I had the opportunity to make flower crowns for a couple of client events. What was once just a fun summertime hobby turned into a full-time business and I could not be more thankful to have the opportunity to do what I love every day. My mother is very crafty and when I was growing up, we would design and make my dresses and accessories for school dances and special occasions. Her creative spirit has always influenced me. I always dreamed of owning my own business, so I feel lucky that dream has become a reality.

Saks: Has working in the beauty industry inspired or biased your floral work? Do these two seemingly disparate worlds come together in your work now?

Christy: Transitioning from a full time PR job to operating a small business has certainly been challenging, but thankfully I am still able to work within the beauty space while collaborating with brands, editors and other publicists. The two worlds are constantly colliding and some of my favorite projects involve working with beauty brands and publicists on creative events and mailings. There are so many amazing people in the beauty industry who have supported me over the years and I wouldn’t be doing any of this without them!

Saks: Are there any fashion tips when accessorizing with a crown? Or does anything go?

Christy: Every crown and occasion is so different, which is why I have decided to operate a custom business for now. My designs are often inspired more by the personality of the person wearing the crown versus what they’re wearing. Some clients want big and bold flowers to coordinate with a bright dress, while others prefer dainty baby’s breath for a sweeter look. I think that there is always a time and place for a headpiece and whether you’re wearing a black dress with a bun or a summer maxi and beachy waves, there is a design that can work for you.

There’s Nothing Like a Romantic Crown of Red Roses

Michael Kors: Dress

Saks: Have you found certain types of crowns don’t work for certain face shapes or hair types? Is there a rule of thumb you can share for selecting the style and material of your crown?

Christy: I often ask clients to send me inspiration photos to start so we can land on something that makes sense for them. Like shopping for a dress, factors such as hair color, season, occasion and your overall desired look should all be considered when selecting the flowers or style of your crown. White flower crowns will generally look bridal, redheads rock light pink flowers well, dahlias are not available year-round, lily of the valley is pricier than baby’s breath and if petite, you may not want to wear huge peonies on your head! There are so many things to consider, which is why every piece is customized.

Saks: Last question: Though you work with all types of flowers, you must have a personal favorite? Clue us in and tell us why!

Christy: I have favorite flowers for arrangements, which vary from my favorite flowers for crowns just considering the size, lifespan and look when worn vs. used as a centerpiece. For arrangements, I love garden roses, peonies and sweet peas. For flower crowns, I love baby’s breath, spray roses, ranunculus, freesia, eucalyptus and lavender. Although I rarely use baby’s breath in arrangements, it may be my favorite to use in a flower crown because I think it creates such a whimsical look and also dries out really well.
