Bringing the Light Back In

Just because you’ve prepped your skin for makeup, it doesn’t mean you have to bombard your face with an army of chemicals to get a result that satisfies. Use a bit of the Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara to bring some glow to the eyes and accent the entire frame of your face with a touch of Exhibit A Blush to help make your natural bone structure take center stage. Use a bit of the Red Square Velvet Matte Lip Pencil for that necessary pop of vibrancy.

Rouge Louboutin Nail Colour Gets the Dream-Like Lynchian Glow Treatment

And that next step has a name. ‘Rouge Louboutin Nail Colour’ from Christian Louboutin Beaute’ is the world’s most iconic shade of red imprisoned in a piece of faceted crystal. As a product, it’s simply the most natural possible progression for the Louboutin brand. “The red sole was born from red nail polish,” says Louboutin, who painted the soles of a pair of ‘Pensee’ heels back in 1992 with his assistant’s red nail enamel when he felt the prototype lacked a certain je ne sais quoi. “I am giving back to nails what the shoe took from the nails many years ago.”

Rouge Loubouton Nail Colour is meant to be an “objet d’art” in and of itself, with its spike-like handle, a play on Louboutin’s iconic ‘Ballerina Ultima’ shoe heel, its all meant to evoke what Louboutin himself identifies as “a painterly experience, both for her and for anyone who may be watching her.”

Rouge Louboutin Nail Colour Positioned for Global Takeover

Though, the artistic experience is two-fold. To help introduce the world to Christian Louboutin Beaute’, the esteemed designer commissioned auteur American director David Lynch to direct a short video with a surrealist bent, one that showcases not just Rouge Louboutin Nail Colour, but this magical landscape the designer has dubbed “Loubiville”.  With its computer-generated city in space and staple Lynchian idiosyncrasies, it feels like a beauty ad by Rene Magritte. Loubiville is envisioned as an all-white city that mimics the shapes and angles of the crystal bottle the red lacquer-like nail polish comes in, but completely devoid of color. And there’s only one thing that can save Loubiville from its dramatic lack of beauty – a full-blown Rouge Louboutin Nail Colour invasion.

Shoppers who spent over $175 on beauty products at the event were treated to an exclusive and complementary white or cobalt mesh bag.

With the creme de la creme of the beauty world on our ground floor, we’d be remiss to let them leave without spilling a few beauty secrets. We paid a quick visit to our friends at their respective Dior, Laura Mercier, Estee Lauder, ReVive and Cle’ de Peau boutiques and got the low-down on each brand’s must-have, never-leave-home-without-it item that each and every single female shopper in the room should have. Consider these five essentials as the final word on beauty on any makeup floor on or off 5th avenue.

Dior - Ricky Wilson: “One Dior product that every woman should have is the DiorShow Iconic Overcurl Mascara. It has a cult following. Once people use it they fall in love.”

Laura Mercier - Luis Soto: “Our Laura Mercier Repair Eye Serum is absolutely amazing. It helps relieve dark circles and keeps the eye-area hydrated.”

ReVive - Julia Osipova: “It would have to be the Moisturizing Renewal Cream. It’s ingredients were first used to heal burn victims – it was created by Dr. Brown, based on scientific research with Nobel Prize winning technology. I can guarantee no other product on this whole floor has been more thoroughly researched.”

Estee Lauder - Derek Miller: “My favorite is our Pure Color Envy lipstick, which offers a lot more wearability as well as more hydration. And the color in it is just magnificent. It’s sculpting so as soon as you put it on you have definition, color and it stays on all day.”

Cle’ de Peau - Andrew Sotomayor: “I have to recommend Cle’ de Peau’s Le Serum. It’s a supercharger that invigorates the skin completely. It is a great place to start with Cle’ de Peau products if you’re a newcomer to the brand because it helps complement other products you may already have. Le Serum helps you to self-rejuvinate and it is perfect for the summer climate as it is extremely light. The last thing you want in this weather is something thick and sticky.”

Viktor&Rolf’s Sweet Surprise

Viktor&Rolf
, masters of intellectually-provocative couture clothing, create a different kind of provocation with their fragrances: a more subversive and sensual allure. All of those dynamics were on display Thursday evening when Saks New York welcomed Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren for their unveiling of BONBON—their long-awaited fragrance followup to Flowerbomb—now available exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue.

BONBON is exactly as it sounds: a sweet, confectionery treat for the senses, though it dries into something far more sensual and risqué. Its bottle, a sculptural bow tie, perfectly camouflages this Lady Danger aspect hidden within the scent. This was the Dutch provocateurs’ intention, they told us, as they took a moment away from their legion of fans and fashion insiders to discuss that intriguing play of “tension between things that don’t match.”

Your apparel collections are intellectually provocative, while your fragrances play to the edge of sensual provocation. Can you elaborate on the specific points of inspiration for your fragrances?
V&R: Perfume starts with language – we take an intellectual approach, first: playing on the tension between things than don’t match…perfume tells a story, and we enjoy being storytellers.

We understand that esteemed perfumiers, Serge Majoullier and Cécile Matton, helped develop BONBON. How involved were you in its creation?
V&R: We were very involved. We started with the name, which we settled on right away, and knew that we wanted something sweet…it was a pleasurable process for us. There was a precise direction around caramel, but then of course, we had to make a fragrance, and refine the scent to a perfect vision. Our scents may be successful because we feel as strongly about our scents as our customers do.

What are some key notes in BONBON for our Saks perfume connoisseurs?
V&R: There is an addictive and buttery caramel note with sexy undertones.

What are your most poignant fragrance memories, good, bad or ugly?
V&R: The old Shiseido and Dior perfume ads that we saw as kids were so impressive, and are the reason we went into fashion! They were poetic…they were stylized imagery.

Your couture collection was somewhat inspired by the new BONBON bottle. How do your fragrance and clothing businesses overlap aesthetically?
V&R: Fragrance is the border between skin and clothing. And like clothing, fragrance is conceptual and glamorous.

What’s on the horizon for a Viktor&Rolf Spring Break?
V&R: Surfing in L.A.!

Laurice Rahme Works Her Magic

The founder of Bond No. 9 New York visits our flagship.

Everybody knows the story of the genie in the bottle, but what about the city in the bottle? Fitting one spirit into such a small space may be dismissed as fairy tale, but Laurice Rahme bottles a metropolis—all its character and attitude—as the founder of Bond No. 9 New York. Her scents capture the essence of NYC’s most vibrant neighborhoods (the High Line, Madison Square Park and Chelsea among them), but does she have a favorite? We asked her. How do you decide on a new neighborhood and its corresponding scent? Rahme: I only do neighborhoods I find interesting. If you really know the spirit of the neighborhood and the people who live there, it’s easy to do. What’s you favorite fragrance note? Rahme: Now…

How do you decide on a new neighborhood and its corresponding scent?
Rahme: I only do neighborhoods I find interesting. If you really know the
spirit of the neighborhood and the people who live there, it’s easy to do.

What’s you favorite fragrance note?
Rahme: Now it’s patchouli—it’s very warm, very attractive—and there
are many ways to work with it. But for spring, it’s gardenia.

What’s your favorite Bond No. 9 perfume?
Rahme: Coney Island. I love margaritas, and the first thing you smell
is Mexican lime and a tequila note. This fragrance has a party spirit.

Tell us about Saks New York Oud.
Rahme: People love it—especially in the winter. New York winters
are rough, and this fragrance is like a big cashmere sweater

What’s next for Bond No. 9?
Rahme: We’re doing a big new spring scent—Hudson Yards.

Aerin Lauder Looks Back…and Forward

The style maven introduces the AERIN Fragrance Collection at Saks New York.

For Aerin Lauder, granddaughter of Estée, daughter of Ronald and founder of her eponymous beauty and home label, childhood memories are surely sweet. But luckily for AERIN fans, they aren’t just nostalgia: they’re the jumping-off point for her debut fragrance collection. Aerin (with family in tow) celebrated the launch at Saks New York and told us about the moments behind the scents. Tell us about the memories that inspired these fragrances. Lauder: Lilac Path was inspired by a lilac bush at my house on Long Island, which was originally my grandmother’s. It’s beautiful…to me it defines spring and really captures that moment. Do you have a favorite fragrance from your collection? Lauder: I have to say, it’s Ikat Jasmine—I put it on every single morning…

Do you have a favorite fragrance from your collection?
Lauder: I have to say, it’s Ikat Jasmine—I put it on every single morning and then complement it with other scents for nighttime. It’s also inspired by my house, which is all blue and white because my grandmother loved those colors.

The holiday season is here—what are some of your favorite gift ideas?
Lauder: Candles are my go-to gifts—Jo Malone London and the AERIN collection are my favorites. Also, makeup bags. Women always want new ones!

What’s your easiest piece of style advice?
Lauder: Embrace what looks good on you. Just because something’s on-trend doesn’t mean you have to wear it. It’s really about reinforcing your natural beauty.

In between photos and autographs, we got the scoop on Hennessy’s new fragrance and learned that the devil truly is in the details.

Your latest scent: Playing with the Devil.
Hennessy: People who play with the devil also play with temptation, which I like. There’s a wink in the name, so I needed to find the same wink within the scent itself.  The fragrance contrasts between a lively opening made with blood orange essence, white peach and lychee, and a much more devilish, woodsy dry down.

How do you balance modern tastes and old-world artistry?
Hennessy: I have very limited distribution—it really gives me a freedom that others don’t have. What’s important is that my scent expresses the emotion carried by the name. That’s the only thing that interests me.

You’re in New York now…how would you bottle its scent?
Hennessy: It’s funny because we’re actually opening our own retail shop in America and it will have one exclusive scent called Apple Brandy, which is an homage to my cognac heritage and a wink to New York.
