Haider Hits Saks

Haute designer Haider Ackerman Stops by Saks to talk style and substance

Haider Ackerman is very French.  Or at least he feels very French. The Colombian-born, Africa and Antwerp-raised, Paris-based designer and terribly buzz-worthy designer stopped by Saks recently to talk fashion, his gorgeous clients and what he loves about living in Paris. SaksPOV: Your fall collection is all about the urban warrior. What do women today battle and what kind or armor do you envision them needing? Haider Ackerman: I’m surrounded by strong women, but perhaps it’s only the women I’m surrounded with or due to the times we are living in, but they have a fragility to them. It’s a struggle today [to be a women] you need to be strong, but soft. It’s a contrast. SaksPOV: You often speak of your dreams. What was…

What was the last dream you remember?
H.A.: I can’t remember my last dream! But I hope that I will never give up dreaming. Dreaming gives you courage when you are insecure and full of doubt.

SaksPOV: Who is a woman you fantasize about dressing?
H.A.: I never have one person in mind. It wouldn’t be democratic.

SaksPOV: What is your design process like?
H.A.:  For me, it always starts with music. Music reflects what I’m going through, whether I’m happy or sad, or in love…

SaksPOV: So what are you listening to now?
H.A.: I can’t tell you that!

SaksPOV:  Finish this sentence: When a woman wears Haider Ackermann I want her to ________.
H.A.:  Feel desirable.

SaksPOV: You grew up across the world in Colombia, Antwerp, etc. What do you love about Paris?
H.A.: I have always felt Paris. I never grow tired of it. I love Paris every day I am there.

Case in point: Rahme has dedicated six Bond No. 9 New York scents in homage to the distinctive shores of New York with Sag Harbor, Montauk, Coney Island, Hamptons, Eau de New York and Fire Island. With summer just around the bend, we talked to Laurice about beach essentials.

SaksPOV: What do you love most about the summer?
Laurice Rahme: I love the scent of the flowers and fruits — the feeling and scent of sun on your skin, a deep blue sky and of course the feeling of freedom. I love dinners or cocktails outside in my private home or going out. Most of all I love that life takes place outside.

SaksPOV: Beaches have inspired many of your fragrances. What do you love about the beach — specifically what do you love about New York beaches?
L.R.: The New York beaches are so unique! So close to the energy and dynamism of Manhattan, yet so far away with the ocean lapping at your feet and the horizon way, way out over the sea. These beaches have a beautiful heritage that I love to celebrate and pay homage to with my scents — the history and liveliness of Coney Island, the sophistication of the Hamptons, the fun-filled quirkiness of Fire Island, the authenticity and old world feel of Sag Harbor.

SaksPOV: What is your favorite beach destination?
L.R.: I cannot say – they are all so unique and wonderful! I love them all!

SaksPOV: What are your fashion must-haves for a weekend at the beach?
L.R.: It depends on my mood and – of course – the weather! My essentials are hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. The rest is up to how I feel that day.

SaksPOV: How does your personal style vary on each beach?
L.R.: It is really my mood that inspires me anew every day.

SaksPOV: What is your favorite beach activity (reading, listening to music, swimming, etc.)?
All of the above! I enjoy time away from the hustle and bustle but at the same time I love spending time in the cafes, restaurants, and shops. I love life and enjoy being where it happens.

SaksPOV: Who do you like to go to the beach with?
L.R.: My friends and family! There is nothing better than a weekend in at the beach with big dinners outside and the scent of seawater in the air. That’s when life is light and carefree.

SaksPOV: What is the best way to incorporate fragrance in the summer?
L.R.: Wear what you love and what makes you feel free and confident!

Jo Malone London’s Summer Breeze

A Guide to Scenting Your Home for Summer

Photography by KSW For me, the smell of a summer home is a curious, but pleasant blend of salty beach air, the waft of a neighbor’s grill and the sharp blast of air conditioning upon stepping foot home after a day of outdoor activities.  Shaun Rowan’s home? The Director of Education at tony British perfumery Jo Malone London, believes your home scent should reflect your tastes, your mood and the tone you want to set. “When I imagine the scents of summer, I think of an English garden in the rain, the sweet nectar of fresh fruit, a shimmering oasis,” effuses the dapper Brit in the crispest Queen’s English. For me, the smell of a summer home is a curious, but pleasant blend of salty beach air, the waft of a neighbor’s grill and the sharp blast of air conditioning upon stepping foot home after a day of outdoor activities.  Shaun Rowan’s home? Just a tad more glam than that.

Needless to say, I wanted to try his version of a summer home — and now you can too.

Here, Shaun — who has been a fragrance expert for 25 years, with his first job as a young man in Harrods Men’s Fragrance Hall — shows just how to achieve that bespoke fragrant mix for your home that is signature to the 19-year old perfumery.

“The change of season is a great energizer. It’s refreshing and makes you feel great,” says Shaun. “Fragrance is a big part of bringing that into your home.” Jo Malone London is the first perfumery to institute fragrance combining (as in all of the house’s scents are designed to be layered  — from lighting different candles at once to create a signature scents, or creating a vibe in each room via diffusers and room sprays). It’s all about  expressing your  unique scent style the moment you or your guests cross the threshold.

Jo Malone London’s Guide toScenting Your Home for Summer

For the Kitchen: “A candle is the best way to express your personal tastes.”  For the kitchen try the French Lime Blossom candle or English Pear & Freesia.

For the Living Room: “It’s great to layer these scents, mix a candle or two, with a diffuser.” Try the Lime Basil & Mandarin Luxury Candle with English Pear & Freesia Scent Surround diffuser.”

For the Powder Room: “For the bathroom try something with Grapefruit. Either a candle or diffuser.”

For the Bedroom: “For the bedroom, perhaps something a bit sultrier, like a candle in Pomegranate Noir.” Also try Red Roses Scent Surround Room Spray.

SaksPOV: It’s 830 am, and you seem fairly chipper…
Tabitha Simmons: I wake up every day at 6am to get my kids ready for school, so this isn’t early for me at all!

SaksPOV: And it finally feels like springtime in New York. What is your favorite part of spring?
T.S.: The warm weather, absolutely!

SaksPOV: What will you be wearing this spring? Do you have any favorite styles from your collection in mind?
T.S.: I’m just so excited to be able to wear lighter shoes. I’ve been in boots and ankle boots for so long now. I’m going to wear these striped oxfords a lot!

SaksPOV: What is it like when you meet with customers?
T.S.:  It’s the greatest thing, honestly. I used to work at a shoe store — it was my first Saturday job. I love seeing what people like.

SaksPOV: What do you think when you see someone wearing your shoes?
T.S.: I still get excited! When I see someone wearing my shoes on the street, I accost them and say, “I made those shoes!”

Courreges Under Fire

One of the most notable brands hailing from the Swinging Sixties is back

Photographed by Fouli R. Elia

In the Sixties, André Courrèges was a bit of a fashion revolutionary. Believing that women should be freed of the waist-nipping constriction of the haute couture, the daring designer offered women swingy A-line dresses, low-heeled white leather boots and cropped trousers that yielded a combinations of sportif with futurism. His use of unlikely materials such as vinyl and plexi in the 1964 “Space Age” collection put the French house on the map and garnered boldface fans including Audrey Hepburn.

Fast forward to 2013 and Courrèges is back and it’s at Saks. Vibrant, architectural and perfectly mod, the collection harkens back to a time when the advent of the world’s first computers, calculators and electronic fuel injections were making headlines. And perhaps it’s perfect timing as today’s rapid advancement of technology too, can lead to dreams of flying cars — or electric cars in the least.

Le Labo shows how to make a personal statement with fragrance

Fabrice Penot wants to make the world beautiful, although more often than not his work is invisible to the naked eye.

The ephemeral beauty that Penot has long sought after is that of fragrance. In 2006, Penot, —who once toiled in creating scents for major fashion houses — partnered with Eddie Roschi, to found Le Labo, an indie perfumery in NoLita.

“There was always a joy and excitement when we were in the lab, creating perfumes,” says Penot of his early days as a perfumer. “We wanted to bring that excitement of perfume creation to Le Labo.”

Fittingly, Le Labo translates from French to The Laboratory.

In launching Le Labo — which is sold at Saks Fifth Avenue in Houston and in the fall, New York — Penot and Roschi enlisted a prestigious group of international master perfumers and gave them carte blanche to create the ultimate fragrance collection — with no budgetary limitations. The results are a succinct, but no less remarkable collection of 12 staple fragrances that are unique, soothing, interesting and inspiring — and oh yes, totally luxe (It’s also the perfect customized gift!).

“The energy and spirit we put into these perfumes will make your life better,” Penot exclaims. “We make people’s lives better through perfumery.”

In true scientific fashion, the perfumes are housed in beaker-like bottles and the metallic caps are clinical-looking, giving the wearer the experience of having a fragrance made truly for them in a fragrance lab. But there’s the catch — they are. Le Labo hand mixes each of its extraordinary fragrances for each of its customers. From combining the top-secret blends of essential oils with the precise amount of alcohol and water, each perfume is finished with a custom label with the date; it’s expiration and the wearer’s name. It’s all made to order.

One thing that many people realize after first being introduced to Le Labo — you simply can’t stop collecting fragrances. While some change their fragrances with the seasons, others collect and layer different scents together creating a unique “olfactive statement,” says Penot.  One bottle of Le Labo is simply not enough.

Here, SaksPOV visits Le Labo’s New York headquarters where Penot showed us the steps they take in creating one of the ultimate fragrance experiences in the world (and at Saks!).

The Making of Le Labo Rose 31:

Fabrice Penot.

The top-secret formula for Rose 31 is combined with water and alcohol solution to stabilize the delicate blend. In addition to rose, there are 31 other ingredients that comprise this surprisingly masculine and complex fragrance.

It’s all blended together by hand with a glass stirrer.

After it’s poured into bottle and bottle gets closed and shaken on the mixer.

The cap is placed on the bottle and is “crimped” together and sealed.

A label is created with the customer’s name, the date, expiration date and the location where it is made.

Last week, lucky Saks shoppers in Short Hills and New York City got to ask one of the most esteemed editors in the biz herself, Avril Graham Beauty editors about what products they should be using, the backstory behind the latest skincare technology, or if the anti-aging super serum (rife with a litany of completely unpronounceable ingredients) actually works!  The executive Fashion and Beauty Editor of Harper’s Bazaar came to Saks to celebrate for Fabulous at Every Age, the fourth annual event with Estee Lauder to find five women from ages 20 to over 60 with who are, simply put: rocking it. For those who didn’t have a chance to meet Avril (who you may recognize from regular appearances as a fashion contributor on the Today show and Fashion Police) we spoke to her about beauty, style and the right beauty product for every decade.

SaksPOV: What makes a woman beautiful?
Avril Graham:  An understanding of your own sense of self makes a woman beautiful. Having the confidence of knowing what makes you tick boosts morale and although it sounds like a cliché, a smile can be the best accessory of all.

SaksPOV: Who exemplifies your idea of beauty and why?
A.G.: Gosh, there are so many women throughout the decades that have been so fabulous in many ways —and all have appeared on the cover of Bazaar. Grace Kelly, Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn. I could go on and on before even touching on the gorgeous women of today.

My favorite era for beauty is the Fifties and those wonderful Avedon models of that time — always flawless make up.

SaksPOV: Tell us about Bazaars’ Fabulous at Every Age. What has the response been to the features you do of woman at every age category? Have you ever been surprised at the reaction to one of your pieces?
A.G.: At Bazaar we have always addressed that beauty and style have no cutoff point in terms of age. Our Fabulous at Every Age fashion and beauty features have always been hugely popular. As editors, we love to advise and search for the best new looks and products for our readers — the best of the best!

SaksPOV: What Lauder product is a must have for every decade?

A.G.:

20′s: Pure Color Vivid Shine Lipstick. It’s great to experiment with color and looks at this age.

30′s: Double Wear Stay in Place Eye Pencil. Juggling family and career this product is perfect for the no time busy lady in her 30′s. Apply and it looks perfect all day.

40′s: Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum. In your 40′s its time for preventative care to avoid fine lines.

50′s: Re Nutriv Ultimate Lift Age Correcting Creme. Nurture, smooth, lift and age correct in this decade.

60′s: Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia
Elegant and classic. A memorable fragrance.

70′s: Perfectionist Targeted Deep Wrinkle Filler.
A wonderful product, ideal to smooth lines.

80′s: Pure Color Nail Lacquer
Enjoy a pampering manicure with beautiful nail color.

All ages should have a Five Color Eye Shadow Palette in their make up bag. You can perfect your look and play with color regardless of age and lifestyle.

SaksPOV: What is the best beauty advice you’ve been given?
A.G.: Regardless of trend, know what suits you best. Sage advice from a make up artist on set in Paris.

SaksPOV: What have you learned on set that every woman can bring into her real-life beauty regimen?
A.G.: Update your make up and refresh product in your make up bag. Don’t get stuck in a rut with that same old color or frosted lipstick you have favored for years. A new beauty look can instantly make you look younger and add a boost of confidence. I have seen this so many times when we have given a customer a more modern approach to make up application. It’s a first step to a makeover together with a great haircut!
