Jenny Wu Interviews Cut 25 designer Yigal Azrouel

My first encounter with the extraordinary designs of Yigal Azrouël took place a few years ago. I flew to New York to attend a friend’s graduation and stole an afternoon to go shopping in the Meatpacking district. In typical New York fashion, heavy downpour unexpectedly commenced. I ran inside the closest open door seeking shelter and warmth. I found both and just a little bit more. I was inside the Yigal Azrouël boutique and instantaneously fell in love with the brand’s intricate fabrics, design aesthetics and innovative styling. That afternoon, I shopped up a storm. Recently, I had the opportunity to interview (my designer crush) Mr. Azrouël himself on life, fashion and his fabulously chic contemporary line, Cut 25.

I also got to style and shoot pieces from Cut 25, a fall 2012 collection that is absolutely chic, stylish and perfect for sunny days, rainy days, and every day in between.

My interview with Yigal Azrouël:

SaksPOV: What’s your driving force behind creating Cut 25? Who or what inspires you in fashion, film, music, art, pop culture?
Yigal Azrouël: I really wanted to create a brand that aims to offer designer quality and aesthetic at a more accessible price point. I draw a lot of inspiration from my travels and nature, most recently to Paris and the gardens in Japan. I always have music playing in the studio which really gets me in the mood and establishes my mindset.

SaksPOV: Which key elements separate Cut 25 from the Yigal Azrouel collection?
Y.A.: The Cut 25 girl is a bit edgy; she is educated on fashion and aware of current fashion trends, but she’s much more whimsical with her style choices than the woman who is wearing pieces from my mainline collection. The Yigal Azrouël woman is more refined and sophisticated.

Cut 25 jacket, Michael Antonio shoes and Jenny Dayco jewelry

SaksPOV: You are one busy man as you are creating, designing and running three separate collections every season! How do you balance and manage your time?
Y.A.: I’ve definitely become much more organized over the years, and I’ve really learned to wear a different hat depending on the collection I am designing for. Each one requires a different thought process but under it all really come from a similar creative and intellectual space.

SaksPOV: I know you’ve practically lived in New York all your life. To date, what’s your favorite New York moment?
Y.A.: It’s not a specific moment really, but I love walking on The Highline and people watching. I feel like this is one of the most ‘New York’ things you can do.

Cut 25 pants, Mara Hoffman top and Jenny Dayco jewelry

SaksPOV: What blogs are you obsessed with?
Y.A.: T The Moment and Business of Fashion, but I am always looking to find new blogs.

Cut 25 dress, Rory Beca belt and shoes by 3.1 Phillip Lim

SaksPOV: What are the five things you absolutely, positively cannot live without?
Y.A.: Nike running shoes, iPad, Blackberry, Steve McQueen Persol sunglasses, My Surfboard

Cut 25 top and pants, vintage Hermes bag and Jenny Dayco jewelry

SaksPOV: Your fashions shows are coming up! Do you have any superstitions, good luck charms, talismans?
Y.A.: I am not a superstitious person at all, so with the show coming up, I really just pretend like it’s a larger scale of what I do every day, imagining the audience to be my design team for example.

SaksPOV: What is the last dream you remember having? Did it inspire your collections at all?
Y.A.: I do not seem to remember my dreams lately, but in terms of inspiring my collections, this is mostly done through my day to day experiences.

Get to Know Antonio Berardi

The Sicilian born, London-bred designer stops by Saks to talk about style and substance

At Saks, we always get asked about the people behind the clothes. So, when a designer stops by Saks, SaksPOV is always on the ground, ready with a litany of questions to quench the curiosities of our fashion-loving audience. Antonio Berardi recently stopped by Saks’ New York flagship and talked to us about razor-sharp style, inspiration and how he got into the fashion business — and oh, his drop dead gorgeous clothes! SaksPOV: Were you always a lover of fashion? Antonio Berardi: I grew up in a Sicilian household in the middle of England. We had this weird idea of how people would see you. SaksPOV: Were you always a lover of fashion?

Antonio Berardi: I grew up in a Sicilian household in the middle of England. We had this weird idea of how people would see you. I had a Sicilian wardrobe for when we went back to Italy and an English wardrobe.

SaksPOV: How is your unique upbringing reflected in your ready-to-wear?

A.B.:  My collection reflects both my Catholic and Sicilian sides. It goes from very strict and restricted to very sensual.

SaksPOV: How do you describe your style?

A.B.:  I like things that are crisp and timeless…things a woman can keep in her wardrobe for more than one season. It’s easy to design base on trend. It’s not easy to design classics.

SaksPOV:  Where do you find inspiration?

A.B.:  I’m inspired by art, music and film. I always imagine the [musical] beats my clothes are walking to.

SaksPOV:  Tell us about your Fall 2012 collection that’s in Saks now?

A.B.:  I was looking at churches and their baroque, curved forms inspired curved seams. It’s the idea that you would whip something as hard as marble to appear soft. It’s also slightly 80’s influenced, with its off-kilter asymmetry.

Minkettes, SaksPOV readers, fashion lovers, I’m here guest blogging for Saks to talk about the perfect way to transition to fall fashion — even if it’s not quite sweater weather yet.  It’s all about nail art! Check out my favorite nail art manicures of all time, courtesy of Valley Nails:

Solar powered: (Left) This mani gives you the sun, moon and stars. Totally outrageous!

40 Licks: (Right) This dusty blue base color lends itself perfectly to the surprise of the iconic Rolling Stones logo.

Blue period: (Left) Shades of blue are so elegant and chic — especially when popped with spots of gold.

Have fun with nail art! (Right) Don’t be afraid of color and show your wild side. Love this tie-dye look!

Also, here are some of my favorite polish colors for fall:

From left: Nars in Purple Rain, Le Métier de Beauté in Hope Diamond Blue, Estée Lauder Pure Color Nail Lacquer in Chaos and Dolce & Gabbana Intense Nail Lacquer in #121 Passione

Five Things I Need For Fall

SaksPOV guest blogger Jenny Wu picks her favorites from Saks.com for fall!

This boat neck peplum top in an eye-catching maroon abstract print is the perfect waist cinching everyday statement staple. And how sexy is the sheer back panel? I’ll wear it with a pencil skirt for work and leather leggings for play. Maroon is the “it” color this fall which puts these jeans on the top of the style heap. The color blocking keeps it dressy and versatile enough to wear day and night. Perfection! The mix of draping and asymmetrical cut creates a proportionately stunning everyday dress while the Peter Pan collar subtly adds a touch of unexpected whimsy. No wonder Carven is one of my favorite brands! I will be wearing this floral beauty to all fall weddings and bridal showers as its feminine draw is undeniable…

I’ve been salivating over these pointy toe stunners for weeks. It’s rare find heels that are demurely sexy and appropriate for all occasions.

What’s in Their Bags?

Purseblog interviews Loeffler Randall's Jesse Randall and Saks Insider Beth Kanfer on What's in Their Bags

One of my favorite parts of my job is partnering with designers and companies I both love and respect, and this is precisely what happened last week with SaksPOV and Loeffler Randall. Our teams all met to work on a fun interview and photoshoot surrounding the new Loeffler Randall bags, and let me tell you that a morning of pure joy and excitement ensued. Chatting with both the Saks team and Jessie Randall of Loeffler Randall about the introduction of the bags was quite the treat, and the bags are simply gorgeous. Similar to her shoes, the bags are both chic and demure, with high quality design and materials both inside and out. This is a line you won’t want to miss and we are…

Snooping at Saks: Beauty Director Edition

Every beauty editor, from all of my favorite magazines, convening on the Saks beauty floor? Heaven!

I didn’t need to be asked twice to cover the Beauty Editors Day to benefit Look Good, Feel Better on Thursday, August 16th.  It was the perfect opportunity to ask these ladies the one question I had always wanted the answer to: What tip that you learned on the job is now part of your everyday beauty routine?  Jane Larkworthy, Beauty Director, W: “Applying eyeliner on the inner lash line as opposed to above the lashes” is her favorite tip learned on the job.  Shoving the liner up into the lashes from below gives the perfect definition to the eye without looking over-done.    Molly Nover Baker, Beauty Director, Women’s Health: “Eye primer is a must.” Molly won’t do her eye makeup without it- she…

I didn’t need to be asked twice to cover the Beauty Editors Day to benefit Look Good, Feel Better on Thursday, August 16th.  It was the perfect opportunity to ask these ladies the one question I had always wanted the answer to:

What tip that you learned on the job is now part of your everyday beauty routine?

Jane Larkworthy, Beauty Director, W:Applying eyeliner on the inner lash line as opposed to above the lashes” is her favorite tip learned on the job.  Shoving the liner up into the lashes from below gives the perfect definition to the eye without looking over-done.

Molly Nover Baker, Beauty Director, Women’s Health: “Eye primer is a must.” Molly won’t do her eye makeup without it- she says that a good primer drastically increases the staying power of her shadows, improves their appearance on the lid and guarantees a crease-free finish.

Ying Chu, Beauty Director, Marie Claire: “Blush is more important than concealer.” When she wants to look awake, instead of reaching for concealer, Ying applies blush to the apples of her cheeks for an instant glow- coupled with an eyelash curler to open up the eyes, it works wonders.

Holly Carter, Beauty Director, People StyleWatch:Exfoliating 3 times a week is the easiest way to get skin glowing.” In addition, she loves that it makes skincare products absorb better and sloughs off dead skin cells- a super simple way to boost one’s complexion in seconds.

Alyssa Hertzig, Beauty Director, Shape: “Foundation all over your face is a mistake that leads to a mask-like look.” Instead, Alyssa applies product in the middle of her face, focusing on red areas around the nose, forehead and chin. Then, she blends the foundation outwards — leaving a natural, but still polished, finish. Bonus tip- she swears by a foundation brush.

Pamela Edwards, Beauty and Fashion Director, People: “White polish under neon polish makes it pop.” Think of the white polish like a primer, she says- one coat is the perfect base to insure that bright hues look, well, bright.
