Get to Know Terron Schaefer, the Man Behind the Magic!

Creative, inspiring and a Renaissance Man are just a few of the ways that people have described Terron Schaefer, Saks Fifth Avenue’s Executive Vice President, Chief Creative Officer. Just seen as a judge on “Fashion Star,” Schaefer is responsible for the overall experience of shopping at Saks. Here, he chats with us about what it takes to become a great designer, some great fashion advice and why he decided to work in the fashion industry in the first place.

I knew I wanted to work in fashion when…

I had my first suit made as a young boy in London on Savile Row at Anderson & Sheppard — selecting fabric, looking at linings, choosing buttons.

My first job out of college was…

Working for World Boat in London, a company owned by the legendary Stavros Niarchos

I’ve learned the most in my life from…

My father — the most elegant man I ever met.

The best thing about my job is…

Creating (and maintaining) the image of Saks Fifth Avenue.

My biggest challenge is…

However much we would like advertising to be a science — because life would be simpler that way — the fact is that it is not. It is a subtle, ever-changing art, defying formulization, flowering on freshness and withering in imitation; where what was effective one day, for that very reason, will not be effective the next, because it has lost the maximum impact of originality.

Every young designer should…

Think BIG and be consistent in building your brand. And be nice to everyone — humbleness and manners are so important.

Saks is such a unique store because…

Every floor is a kind of heaven — whatever your passion from lingerie on Ten to fragrance on One.

Some of my all-time favorite designers include…

Geoffrey Beene — a marvelous man, America’s only real couturier. He was a true gentleman — and had the most fantastic house in Honolulu. I also loved what Stefano Pilati did at YSL — his shoes and bags became iconic in a relatively short space of time. Dries Van Noten, Rei Kawakubo, Raf Simons and Peter Dundas are all current favorites.

This summer, I will splurge on…

A black seersucker tuxedo — perfect for hot summer nights.

This summer I’m really looking forward to…

A posh wedding on the Italian island of Pantelleria — lots of friends, beautiful bride, amazing setting, glamorous people in gorgeous clothes and great food and wine.

The best fashion advice I’ve ever received was…

Only go sockless if and when you have brown feet.

French Dressing

The designer you need to know: Guillaume Henry of Carven

Add a new name to the Rolodex of young designers one needs to know. Guillaume Henry. In a few short years, the Frenchman has transformed the couture house of Carven — founded in 1945 by Carmen de Tommaso — into a buzzy ready-to-wear label with fans in Alexa Chung, Emma Watson, Blake Lively and, oh, practically every cool girl about town. His secret? Henry knows how to strike the right balance between the elegant and effortless, and serves it up with a youthful Parisian flair. You know the one. With that elusive French je ne sais quoi. Fresh-faced. Confident. Supremely chic. “The Parisian girl can be everybody and nobody,” he explains. “She is spontaneous, joyful and beautiful.” It’s a vibe that’s hard to bottle, but…

“She is spontaneous, joyful and beautiful.” It’s a vibe that’s hard to bottle, but Henry’s designs — like fall’s modern revamp of Medieval chic — has it in spades.

To hear the designer tell it, his 21st-century take on the storied house isn’t that far off from de Tommaso’s vision. “The Carven girl remains the same,” he says. “Far from being a fashionista, she looks at fashion as a funny game through which she can express her fantasies and dreams.” He even reveals that, when it comes to influences, he has “a soft spot for the post-war decades when people started to express themselves again. It was an unbelievable mix of excitement and innocence.”

Here, a few more revelations from the Givenchy alum, courtesy of Mr. Marcel Proust himself.

What’s your idea of perfect happiness?
To always be surrounded by people I love…

Your idea of misery?
Solitude.

If not yourself, who would you be?
A cat!

What’s your greatest extravagance?
Holidays…

Your favorite motto?
Be yourself!

Good Bad and Fab’s Jenny Wu’s Review of Hervé Léger for Max Azria’s Fall 2012 collection:

The tent was bursting at the seams at the Hervé Léger by Max Azria show. Everyone was there and everyone who wasn’t, wanted to be there. When it comes to mixing sexy sophistication with haute couture attitude, Max Azria always delivers. The extra long double runway was a necessity and served as a dramatic stage for the unveiling of the Fall 2012 Collection-the reinvention of bandage couture. Leather harness corsets, shoulder armor and tough as nails corsets were incorporated into each piece of fashion art, infusing qualities of danger into the traditionally sexy aesthetics of the signature HL bandage dress.

The dramatic elements did not deter from the essence of Hervé Léger as each piece figure huggingly complimented the female form. Fringed skirts, lush fur vests, and sleek patterns rounded out the equestrian theme and perfectly balanced the raw edginess of the harness theme. The combination of sex and grit made for an undeniably seductive show and a jaw-dropping collection, one that will forever be harnessed in my memory as pure Hervé Léger.

Saks Beauty Snooping with Alison Brod

One of the reasons I got in to reporting initially was to indulge my nosey nature. My platforms — be it a TV segment or a blog — give me a constant reason to ask people personal questions that don’t necessarily come up naturally in conversation. And then, in my case, apply their words of wisdom as needed to my own life in order to style smarter or beautify better. Alison Brod works 24/7 yet manages to always look put together. I know this because I worked with her for many years at her agency, Alison Brod Public Relations. She goes out every single night, yet still looks like she got 8 hours of sleep and all the time in the world to get ready…

She goes out every single night, yet still looks like she got 8 hours of sleep and all the time in the world to get ready for early morning meetings.

These are the 5 things Alison would stock up on given shopping spree at the Saks beauty floor:

Fracas  — “Some think this scent is sweet and innocent, others think the tuberose notes are seductive. It was innovative for its time and even cab drivers often ask me what fragrance I am wearing.”

Erno Laszlo Phormula 3-9 —“It is luscious and dense and perfect for summer when you have taken in a lot of the sun and need to renourish and soften.”

MAC Mad Cap Lipglass — “This is an opaque nude gloss with enough color to look like you have made an effort, but it is still fabulously natural looking. This is a gloss for women who are not afraid of sticky.”

Nars Orgasm —“It is almost cliché to say that I love this blush, but it really is a natural color that wakes up your cheeks.”

Caswell-Massey Sea Grass Hand and Body Soap Set —“This is a perfectly priced gift that will last longer than a bottle of wine. The bold photographic packaging is a bit unexpected and for most, will evoke seaside breezes and happy summer memories.”
