Men’s Fashion Inspires the Ladies This Fall

Check out how designers took inspiration from the haberdashery for fall!

Here’s a fun fact for you: Donna Karan, she of the Seven Easy Pieces, black jersey and bodysuits, is the daughter of a custom tailor. That explains her supremely chic emphasis on haute haberdashery for fall, but what to make of the fact that almost every designer out there joined in on her mannish ode to the power woman? By collections’ end, menswear was one of the reigning trends —with precision-cut tailoring and pants, two major must-haves of the season. Chalk it up to a funny little thing called the fashion zeitgeist. Of course, not everyone worked the motif à la Karan, with sexy pinstripes and a Marlene Dietrich vibe. Of course, not everyone worked the motif à la Karan, with sexy pinstripes and a Marlene Dietrich vibe. Derek Lam went sportif and slightly bookish…

…the Proenza Schouler boys found inspiration in the Far East (by way of New York) and Jil Sander Navy was — what else? — beautifully spare.

Burberry Prorsum‘s Christopher Bailey contrasted his usual city chic with countrified tweeds, herringbones and glen plaids…

…while others offered a more feminine counterpoint to all the mensy touches Carolina Herrera, Valentino and Dolce & Gabbana, to name a few.

“I love how strong and confident women appear when wearing clothes inspired by menswear,” says Prabal Gurung, who took things one step further, piling trend atop trend, with a cool cocktail of terrific tailoring and head-to-toe prints. In the end, the designers’ executions may be brilliantly different, but the underscoring message is the same: This fall, there’s no place like homme.

Best Men’s Swim Trunks!

For Onia, outfitting men in stylish beach ensemble is going just swimmingly

When it’s 90 degrees Fahrenheit and the only thing you can think about is getting from your lounge to the pool without burning your feet en route, style might not exactly be top of mind. That’s why we’re grateful that Carl Cunow, designer of Onia did the thinking for us. The fashion industry alum (he spent years working with Steven Alan) sought to create stylish, functional swim trunks that have men looking good, keeping cool and not thinking too hard about it (after all, there is sangria to attend to). Every detail from the soft mesh liner to the fast drying materials and the antique nickel hardware, makes Onia, a swimwear brand that truly puts you first. What is Cunow most excited about this season? Bright colors, seersucker and Liberty prints.  “As for our archival Liberty prints, we introduce new patterns with every delivery, but in this case it’s our first time introducing a Liberty paisley,” Cunow tells SaksPOV.

Must-Have Men’s Shoe For Summer: The Espadrille

Espadrilles are the epitome of au courant

Espadrilles, now a mainstay on the runways, were first worn to battle by the foot soldiers in the Kingdom of Aragon in the 13th century. Today, the rope-soled shoes are a must have, not for warriors, but for weekends and designers from Ralph Lauren to Salvatore Ferragamo have made the shoe a summer staple. “Espadrilles are the shoes of summer,” says Eric Jennings Saks men’s fashion director. “They’re perfect for trekking to the beach or enjoying sunset cocktails. Most likely you’ve seen canvas espadrilles but these by Ralph Lauren have an orange suede upper, which dresses them up a notch and gives them a pop of summer color.” Salvatore Ferragamo’s Burt Strap Espadrille is a hybrid of the original silhouette combined with a leather sandal…

Diamond in the Sky: Nina Runsdorf

The fine jewelry designer is rocking the world of diamonds!

Nina Runsdorf set out to launch her fine jewelry collection, NSR, with one thing in mind: rock the rock business. It’s not every day that a designer can shift the paradigm in a particular category. It’s especially rare when it comes to fine jewelry, a trade going back to ancient times (and in not so ancient times, by well established houses such as Cartier, Graff and Harry Winston). But leave it to Runsdorf the tall, gorgeous and stylish fashion industry veteran, whose family connection in the diamond business goes back seven generations. But leave it to Runsdorf the tall, gorgeous and stylish fashion industry veteran, whose family connection in the diamond business goes back seven generations.

Runsdorf’s claim to fame: diamond slices.

Runsdorf sources magnificent  and unique cuts of diamonds that resemble flat, faceted shards of glass. Each diamond has its own unique, often amorphous shape and sparkles like nothing else. Runsdorf was the first to includes slices in her pieces  and now  her collection has opened up to all shades of the rainbow —  with sapphire, ruby and emerald slices  as the central fixture in her  intricate and rare pieces.  “NSR is modern, creative, elegant and never too precious to be worn,” Runsdorf tells SaksPOV. “I could never find jewelry that was precious yet casual and complimented my modern lifestyle. I wanted fine jewelry that could be worn with a t-shirt and jeans or a ball gown — so I created it.”

What’s more is how Runsdorf sets these magnificent stones. Encapsulated in a hand-set frame of micro-pave diamonds or anchoring the center of a bib necklace, each NSR piece is stunning.

Next up for this native New Yorker is a silver jewelry line bowing this fall at Saks Fifth Avenue. After that, she sees no boundaries. “When people think of the NSR name, I want them to hold on to quality and integrity of all my collections.”

NSR is available at Saks Fifth Avenue’s flagship. 212.753.4000

Behind the scenes Saks Fifth Avenue’s 2012 Fall Campaign Shoot with Isabeli Fontana, Chanel Iman and Anja Rubik!

How do you tame 21 inflated spheres, with some reaching 10 feet high? The creative minds on set at the Saks Fifth Avenue’s Fall 2012 Campaign shoot did so with a lesson of their own. Lead by Saks’ own Chief Creative Officer Terron Schaefer with photography’s master of lighting Albert Watson. Terron’s inspiration came from the simplistic compositions of world renowned German Photographer Horst P. Horst and the ideas of The World’s Fair, in particularly Brussels Atomium and New York’s Perisphere in Flushing Meadow Park. Terron Schaefer, Saks Chief Creative Officer “The Atomium is a structure of links, it meant linking one idea to the next. That’s how I see Saks. It’s about connecting and as a company. Terron Schaefer, Saks Chief Creative Officer

“The Atomium is a structure of links, it meant linking one idea to the next. That’s how I see Saks. It’s about connecting and as a company. Good design is about pure geometry and we own the square with ‘@Saks’ and it made sense to use a sphere in this campaign. It’s about positive and negative. Working with all the creative minds is the most fun. Choosing people you know and trust is always something I look forward to.”

Pep Gay, Make-up Artist

“Both Isabeli Fontana and Chanel Iman have such a big presence so the idea was more about accentuating their personality and characters. They’re so beautiful, you really don’t need a lot and just little touch-ups to make them look polished and glamorous.”

Marco Santini, Hair Stylist

“Isabeli Fontana has been around for such a long time and when I see her work through the years, I feel she looks best when her has soft accents. For Isabeli’s look I looked at a lot of 60’s Italian movies. The casualness looked soft and sexy and that is what I wanted to recreate with Isabeli.”

I like staying open minded when I come to sets. Even if the opinions of others differ from mine, it’s a creative process to come up with a good compromise. Ultimately, you have to work with the girl and make the most of her beauty.

Timothy Biel, Set Stylist

“Spheres are perfect. They are complete and whole. Spheres and circles have a different presence. It’s a brilliant prop.  When Terron showed me the photographs of Horst P. Horst I thought of large pearls. How beautiful they would be, blown up and monumental. Instead we had these spheres custom made and this became a modern urban architecture.”

Summer means…

Stashing my blow dryer for a few months and letting my naturally curly hair have the chance to shine. It’s also a time to escape the sweaty city and spend time with my friends and family on the beach, by a pool or any other outdoor destination.

Favorite summer activities…

Recently, I went kayaking on a vacation to San Diego. I loved it and hope to do more boating this summer. Also, nothing beats an afternoon spent lounging on a deck, eating tasty barbeque food!

I love a bronzed look for summer…

While I’m fair during the winter, I can also get pretty dark when I spend time in the sun. And since I’m a beach bum, layering on SPF (at least every hour!) is a must. Wearing sunscreen also helps me get a deeper, longer lasting tan, because burned skin peels off quicker.

Lauren’s Summer Beauty Must-Haves:

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

Clinique SPF 50 Face Cream

Lancome Rouge in Love Lipstick in Miss Coquet

Bobbi Brown Beach Eau de Parfum Spray

Fair Lady
Lizzie Dunlap, 29

Summer vacation spot…

I like to float around. This year, I’ll be spending time with family and friends everywhere from Pemaquid Point, Maine to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In general, I prefer more laidback places than scene-y spots, but I’m happiest wherever my girlfriends or family members are.

SPF is a must…

I have sensitive skin and usually search out products that are more natural and/or gentle. That said, in a pinch SPF is SPF, so I use everything from my nieces’ kiddie SPF sticks at the pool to heavy-duty physical sunblock lotions for daily wear.

I used to like to look bronzed…

But as I get closer to 30, I’m learning to love my real features more and more. Accepting — and taking care of! — my fair skin is a big part of that.

Lizzie’s Summer Beauty Must-Haves:

La Prairie Anti-Aging Hydra Tint SPF 20

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence

Fekkai Apple Cider Clarifying Shampoo

Sisley Sun Glow Pressed Powder

NARS Manoi Body Glow

Bright and Shining
Leah Melby, 26

Favorite summer activity…
Not that I can do much of it in Manhattan, but I love nothing more than being out on a boat. Going slow, going fast – it’s all fun to me. I’m a summer birthday baby, too, and last year my friends and I all did a big harbor cruise around NYC. It was amazing to be doing something so different in the city.

My summer beauty mantra…
Easy and breezy, with a big focus on hydration. I’m a huge water sipper throughout the day, which effects my skin and hair, and I try to be good about putting lotion on everywhere. I want to look like I’m not trying too hard and am constantly fresh off a relaxing island vacation.

Color in the summertime…
I don’t feel like summer has officially arrived until I’ve got a neon pedicure. I’m not trying to brag, but my friends and I were buying fluorescent polishes at the beauty supply store six years ago (way before it was a thing). The colors only work when I have a little bit of color on my skin, so it’s always exciting when it’s time.

Leah’s Summer Beauty Must-Haves:

Clarins self-tanning lotion

Shiseido Urban Environment Protection

Burberry lipstick in ‘Nude Cashmere’

Laura Mercier Caviar Eye Stick

Lancome Doll Lashes
